这首歌通过一位长眠于战场上的士兵委托一个路人去远方看望自己的爱人为背景，表达了一种对爱人无限思念的伤怀，以及对战争的深刻思考。听着这哀伤优美的旋律，你会深刻体会到歌者要控诉的残酷战争对人类美好生活的摧残和那种生离死别的无奈。

歌词“Parsely sage rosemary and thyme”，回荡在主旋律的每一个章节，这没有任何叙事作用的几件事物，却烘托出了诗一般的缥缈，安详和哀愁。绝妙的和声（实际上这是我听过的最经典的二声部和音）在前三小节一直致力于环境的描述来衬托主旋律的意境，而在第四小节表达了作者对战争的看法：Generals order their soldiers to kill。 And to fight for a cause they have long ago forgotten。。。 是整个作品的思想水平上升到一个崭新的境界。

这首歌是我在高中时听的，第一次听它，便被那优美的旋律深深地迷住。而直到大学，才渐渐领会了歌词的含义。一直很想把这首歌译成中文，可无论怎么努力，总觉得没法达到意境，结构以及内容的统一，直到我在前天看到这篇译作。该文以《诗经》的体裁来阐释这首歌，构思不可为不奇。而文笔之妙，英文水平之高又让我拍案不已。窃以为文当如此，可止以。至于楼上仁兄果有高见，诚愿洗耳恭听。或倘仅竖子之言，不足为虑也。。。
